[Set pre-Raven Boys. Mentions of abuse.]
The first time that Adam gains friends, he makes the mistake of telling his parents about it. That night Robert gets drunk and his retaliation is hard, yet nothing Adam hasn't experienced in the past. He's only thankful that this time around the bruises can be covered up by the ill-fitting Aglionby sweater he'd been given.
The next day he bikes slowly to Aglionby and walks gingerly, trying his best to get through the day without having anyone notice the aches and pains that have been bestowed upon him. He isn't so lucky.
When Gansey asks, Adam tells him that his time at the factory had been especially brutal and he'd be feeling it for a while. Gansey hasn't known Adam for long, so the explanation is enough that he returns to explaining the details of his and Ronan's work trying to find Glendower.
When Ronan joins them later and Adam moves gingerly, neither say anything to one another. All it takes is a look, and Adam knows Ronan won't be fooled by the same excuse. So he keeps his silence, even when he can feel Ronan's eyes on him. Even when he sees the anger silently brewing behind his defiant mask.
It takes him a long time to realize the person Ronan is angry with isn't Adam.
